The province is a short distance away from announcing its plan to complete the four-laning of Highway 11, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines said Wednesday.

Laura Blondeau, assistant to Northern Development Minister Rick Bartolucci, said the province is anxious to unveil its long-awaited Northern Ontario Highway Strategy, which includes a plan to four-lane the remaining 41 kilometres of Highway 11.

She said the only delay is trying to co-ordinate a time and place for the announcement with the Transportation Ministry.

Bartolucci told The Nugget at the end of June the highway strategy was expected to be announced within three weeks.

Bartolucci had said the strategy would set out “clearly and succinctly” a detailed plan for the four-laning of Highway 11.

The city has been awaiting details about how the project will proceed since shortly after a completion date of 2012 for the four-laning work was included in the latest provincial budget.

Tempers flared in North Bay last month after Bartolucci announced an action plan and funding for the four-laning of Highway 69, between Sudbury and south of Parry Sound.

But the minister promised details would soon be announced for Highway 11, saying the province is adamant about meeting the completion dates for both projects.
