Classroom Management

Classroom Rules

Part of my teaching practise is to keep rules to a minimum.

Over the years I have pared down rules to the following five which seem to work best for the age of student I encounter.

I expect that, as the student matures, fewer rules should be needed, ie by secondary school they should be able to operate with only two, these being "write it down" and "one discussion".

Five Rules for the Primary/Junior Classroom:

1. Pay attention.

(I expect a SLANT: Sit up; Lean forward; Act interested; Nod; Track the speaker.)

2. Speak in your own turn.

3. Be polite and respectful of others.

4. Keep your hands and other objects to yourself.

5. Have an "I can do it!" attitude.
