The Professional Management and Cultivation of The Sport of Darts in Canada

Profile:

     Mark Merritt

“Triple M”, Mattawa Mark Merritt , is an example of Northern Ontario youth's rising stars.

A student in Canadore College's Industrial Maintenance Programme, Mark commutes to classes in North Bay daily, returning to Mattawa in the evening to play darts most nights. Mark has played since the age of 10 largely through the Legion programme; his goal is to win his Legion Zone. Mark's career plan is to complete his college programme then enter an apprenticeship with Tembec's Mattawa mill, moving to full employment as an Industrial Maintenance Technician.

Interview:
CPDC: Mark, what do you see as your route to playing Professional Darts?
Mark: "Keep playing in the leagues."
CPDC: What purse values would you like to see? What would excite you?
Mark: " Well, especially for a student, in Doubles, a $200 purse would be a good prize..."
CPDC: What are your thoughts on having Darts in the Olympics?
Mark: "Well, it should be there. Darts is an ancient sport, and it certainly predates snowboarding...
and we need to get the message out that it is not just a game for the old... somehow it got that stereotype and that image has to be overcome."
CPDC: What type of darts do you throw?
Mark:" I throw these... they're the "hand-me-down-from-Grandpa" brand. He gave them to me when I was thirteen. I’ve thought of trying others but I stay with these.
CPDC: Thanks, Mark. We wish you every success today and with your studies and with your darts career.
