The Professional Management and Cultivation of The Sport of Darts in Canada

Profile:

     Mark Desrosiers

Mark Desrosiers convened the John Part Dart Night at North Bay's Voyager Inn.  Mark is active in several leagues in North Bay and regularly travels to Sudbury  for an evening of darts.

At a break in the entertainment, CPDC spoke to Mark.

Interview:

CPDC: So: how did you manage to get John Part here tonight?

Mark: "I simply e-mailed him, having noticed that he was doing several events in Holland, I suggested he might come a few hours North of Oshawa and help promote darts in the North. He replied and we struck a deal."

CPDC: How would you describe the state of the sport in the North Bay area?

Mark: "We are definitely on the upswing.  We are trying to operate activities and tournaments which give variety and more opportunites to win.  Plus, people get better by playing against better players. "

CPDC: How do you fund your activites?

Mark: "Well, when we hold a tournament, the purse money obviously comes from the $10/head entry fee.. we would like to get sponsors and have been somewhat successful.  Our tournaments draw from Sudbury as well. We try to promote a relaxed approach to darts and we think this works for people."

CPDC:  What are your thoughts on Professional Darts in Canada?

Mark: "Darts for higher purses is possible in Canada, especially with the situation with the Golden Harvest and the vacuum created there... there should be an opportunity to have a major event..."

CPDC: Have you been in darts long?

Mark: "Actually, I didn't start darts until I was in my mid-twenties when my father informed me that if you play darts at the Legion, beer's only a buck 'n a quarter!"

CPDC: How do you communicate with the rest of the Darts World?

Mark:  "We have the usual methods plus our website at www.nbdarts.canadianwebs.com  "

CPDC:  Thanks, Mark, for arranging an entertaining evening!
